'I tried the £4 shampoo hack that's more like a bar of soap to replace plastic bottles and it was a game changer’

Being eco-friendly is more mainstream than ever. With the rising cost of living there has never been a better time to save money and the planet, and recently there’s a new product making waves in the sustainability industry.

Step forth: shampoo bars. I’ve seen these little blocks of goodness on my supermarket shelves for years, promising me that they’re a great alternative to liquid shampoo. Sounds tempting, as I’ve been throwing away hundreds of plastic bottles over the years.

I decided to put the theory to the test and spent £4 on Garnier Ultimate Blends Honey Treasures Strengthening Shampoo Bar for Damaged Hair. Quite a mouthful and it sounds posh, but I wasn’t sold just yet.

Later that evening I went for a run and my hair was in dying need of a wash. I am a huge follower of certain products that have been my ride-or-die for years, so I was sceptical that this hack wasn’t going to work for me.

The product looks literally like a bar of soap. I couldn’t imagine myself running my hair through this - it felt like a joke. It was also rather small in size, but this meant that it was travel friendly and one less liquid to take on a flight.

After jumping into the shower and soaking my hair, I began to wet the shampoo bar and gradually saw bubbles foaming in my hand. My nose tickled with hints of honey and sweet beeswax - I can’t lie the smell was divine.

I managed to build up enough foam to start cleaning my hair and I had barely made a scratch on the surface on the bar. A little does go a long way indeed. However, I wasn’t sure how much foam I needed and when enough was enough.

Despite this lack of knowledge, the shampoo bar did its job. My hair did feel quite matted afterwards, but after brushing a comb through it and adding some hair oil - I cannot express how moisturised my hair felt.

It felt bouncy and nourished, and best of all I didn’t even need to use that much. I can confidently say that I will be using this shampoo bar again. On top of this, it’s recyclable, sulphate free and the ingredients are simply a chef’s kiss. What’s not to love?

If you’re passionate about Planet Earth, your carbon footprint and your finances, this simple change will probably transform your life. Shampoo bars are here to stay.

You can buy the shampoo bar from Boots or Amazon.
